230 nautic miles on the Atlantic Ocean from Teneriffa to La Gomera and La Palma

Cast off for a fantastic adventure! The Canary Islands guarantee sailors dreams come true. 60 miles east of the coast of Africa we embark in the port of San Miguel down south the island of Teneriffa. For seven days the Bavaria 51 Cruiser SY PAPAYA from charter company Fancy Lobster will be our floating home. On board: Anne and Mathieu LB with their grown up children, all seaworthy having done sailing in the Carribean and UK.
As Capt´n I was responsible for the charter itinerary that covered about 230 nautical miles – en route from San Miguel down south the island of Tenerife to the islands of La Gomera and La Palma. Throughout the voyage my focus as Capt´n was on safety and professional seamanship. “Throughout the entire voyage, the crew felt safe and very well looked after,” expressed Anne. “Capt’n Micha demonstrated a warm and calm leadership at all times. A particular highlight was that he fulfilled our long-held dream of night sailing, which was executed with great confidence.”
Day One heading to La Gomera the boat did well on the sea with three meter high waves and wind gusts up to 35 knots, reaching a top speed of 9 knots. I decided to dismiss visiting as well El Hierro located further down south, given the actual predictions for wind, weather and waves conditions.
Nonetheless – La Gomera and La Palma rewarded the family crew with beautiful landscapes, unforgettable hiking tours and relaxing evenings in port. One of the highlights of this Christmas sailing week was fulfilling a night sailing under a clear billion stars sky. We departed from Santa Cruz de Teneriffa hours after sunset, me being at the helmet all night long supported by the crew on our ten hours passage to Teneriffa. Magic moment: Sailing into the sunrise… Happy crew – happy Capt´n!
